But first, here is a brief overview of what a volcano is and why it erupts. Volcanoes on Earth help it cool off. Inside the center of the Earth it is very hot. Heat inside the planet needs a way to release in order to cool off, so it escapes toward the surface of the Earth. Along the way, the heat melts rocks which is called magma. When magma and gases break through the crust of the earth, an eruption occurs. The magma that breaks through to the surface it is now called lava. The build up of lava and ash around the eruption hole make a volcano. Of course there are many different kinds of volcanoes with all sorts of characteristics. For instance, some erupt only once and never again, while others may erupt many thousands of times and stay live for a few million years. These facts are for you to find on your own.
