Several fanciful ideas have grown up around ladybugs. Read on for facts and legends about ladybugs from throughout the world.

  • Count the number of spots on a ladybug that you find in your house and you will know how many dollars you will soon receive.
  • If a ladybug has less than 7 spots, a good harvest is predicted. If it has more than 7 spots, a famine is predicted.
  • An English fancy says that finding a ladybug means you will have a good harvest.
  • The number of spots on a ladybug is a sign of how many children you will have.
  • In Swedish lore, if a ladybug lands on a young girl’s hand it means she will soon be married.
  • Discovering a ladybug in your house during the winter is a sign of good luck.
  • In France, if you are sick, a ladybug that lands on you will take your sickness with it when it flies away.

Facts about Ladybugs:

  • Ladybugs chew from side to side, not up and down like we do.
  • Ladybug spots fade as the ladybug ages.
  • Ladybugs are known as Lady Birds in England.
  • Ladybugs won’t fly in the cold. The temperature has to be 55′ Fahrenheit or warmer.
  • The ladybug is the official state insect of 5 states: Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Ohio and Tennessee.
  • Up to 80,000 ladybugs can fit in a gallon jar.
