New Dinosaur Discovered
Just when you thought T-rex was the mother-of-all-monsters, scientists found the 65 million year old bones of a new species of dinosaur in the Narmada River region in western India.
The Rajasaurus narmadensis, which means “regal dinosaur from the Narmada”, was a huge, horned carnivore, or meat -eating creature, that hunted other dinosaurs.
Between 7 and 9 meters long (about 23-29.5 feet), the Rajasaurus was very heavy and strong, and walked on two legs like T-rex did. It lived in the Cretaceous Period, the time when the dinosaur age was ending. Being carnivorous, the Rajasaurus preyed on long-necked titanosaur sauropods that were herbivorous or plant eating dinosaurs that also roamed the Narmada region in India. Aren’t you glad you were not a vegetarian dinosaur when the Rajasaurus was running around?
The scientists first found the center part of the skull, then they found a left hip and right hip, and the triangular bone between the two hipbones—our scientists must be really good with jigsaw puzzles! They also found large eggs of a meat-eating dinosaur where the skeleton of Rajasaurus was discovered, but scientists are not sure if the eggs are those of the Rajasaurus.
It is believed that the Rajasaurus is related to a family of large carnivorous, horned dinosaurs that roamed the regions that are today known as Madagascar, Africa, and South America. The Rajasaurus was probably like the more famous Tyrannosaurus rex. Both the Rajasaurus and the T-Rex are believed to be the last species to live on earth before a huge natural disaster wiped out the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago.
Scientists are not quite sure what caused the death of the dinosaurs, although they do know it was probably a meteor. The place in India where the bones of these dinosaurs were found could provide a clue. The type of earth in which they were found leads us to believe that they perished in one of the biggest volcanic erruptions in the last 500 million years on planet Earth.
What do you think? How did the dinosaurs disappear? Was it earthquakes and volcanoes, or a huge meteor?
