Paul Hamm Olympics Diary: August 2, 2004

Paul Hamm

What does it feel like to be a part of this Olympic Team?
This team just feels so much stronger than the team I competed with in Sydney. We have been second in the past two World Championships and I just have a lot of confidence in my teammates. I really think if we have a great performance, we can come home with a gold medal.

Do you notice anything different from the 2000 Olympic Team you were on? How will this team differ and stand out?
I definitely notice the level of professionalism as far as the athletes are concerned. It is at such a higher level than other teams I have been on and I know all the guys are very enthusiastic and prepared to get things done in Athens.

Paul Hamm Stats

What are you most excited about this year?
I would say competing in the team finals. I think its going to be such a great experience and have a great outcome.

How do you feel about competitions outside the United States? Does it affect you any differently than if you were staying here in the States?
It’s always easier to compete here in the U.S. mainly because there is less travel time. The amount of energy you put into the travel really takes a lot out of you, so I would definitely say it’s more comfortable competing in the U.S. At the same time though, I have been in a lot of competitions overseas, and I have gotten used to that aspect of competition. I don’t think it’s something that will throw any of us off at the Olympics.

Will your training change over the next month? If so, How?
The biggest difference is that we will be training in Athens in gyms that are meant for competition. We won’t have the extra matting and equipment we are used to at our training gyms here, so I think we will be focusing on the quality of the routines we do practice, rather than quantity.

When do you actually leave for Athens?
We leave August 3rd.

What is your personal goal at this year’s Olympic Games? And as a team?
Coming away from Athens, my biggest goal is just to have one Olympic medal. And really, anything beyond that would be great.
