Paul Hamm Olympics Diary: July 7, 2004

How do you feel about your performance at Trials?
I was really happy with it. I only had one routine that I missed and I feel my overall performance was strong. I’m really happy to be on team.
What were you feeling when you found out you were named to the Olympic Team?
I knew after I hit my last routine and the competition was over, that I was in the top two and had secured a spot on team. Once I landed my dismount I knew it. I waved to the crowd because I knew I had just made my second Olympic team and I was really excited about that.
You said in your last diary that you were planning a new vault for the Trials…did you do it and if so, how did it go?
I did do the new vault and it went well. I landed it both days, but did it a bit better on the first day. The second day I stepped outside of the boundary lines, which knocked my score down a bit, but both of my vaults are going very well. Hopefully this will help me get into the event finals in Athens.
Did you get to do anything fun while you were in Anaheim?
Not really. After competition I went out to eat with my parents. I was beat so I just went back to the hotel and went to bed. The next day we had an Olympic team meeting. We went straight from Trials to Woodward Camp to help out the kids and do a small performance. Morgan, Raj and I went and we were there for just over a day.
If you could change one thing from the Trials, what would it be?
Well, the mistake on pommel horse…I would obviously like to change the fact that I fell there. However, now that I know it is a tricky area in the routine, I can work harder and become more solid on that event.
