Paul Hamm Diary: June 9, 2004
Paul, you just won your third consecutive All-Around National Title, how does that feel?
Obviously it feels great! Being the leader going into the Olympics is a great feeling and I feel very confident about the U.S. gymnastics team. It was awesome to have a three-peat and to be the leader of the U.S. team at this time.
What is the importance of this title, especially in comparison to your previous two titles?
I think the importance is the fact that it is during the Olympic year and it is the most important year in the quadrennium. I would rather be where I am at this point in time now, than at this point in other years in the quad.
What was your most exciting moment in Nashville?
When I stuck my dismount on high bar, after doing what I thought was one of my best high bar routines in competition. I think I received a 9.825, which is the best high bar score I have received in a competition.
Did you have any challenges while in Nashville?
I was feeling a little tired because I have been training so much. I have a slight strain under my bicep that was a little sore, but not enough to slow me down.
What did you think of the competition in Nashville?
I thought everyone looked really prepared and we should be able to field a great Olympic Team with the way everyone performed in Nashville.
On a scale of 1-10, rate the intensity level of the Championships.
I would say it was probably a 9, but I think it will be more intense at Trials because it is closer to the final point when the team will be selected.
How does your win affect your training for Trials, if at all?
It makes me a little more relaxed because I have a slight lead going to the Trials. I feel relatively secure in my position, but at same time I will make sure I am still very prepared for Trials and hope to have a great performance there.
Did you have any time for fun in Nashville? If so, what types of things did you get to do?
I didn’t have too much extra time. After the competition I did get to hang out with some friends that came to watch, but that’s about it.
