Jason Gatson Olympics Diary: August, 2 2004

Jason Gatson

How does it feel to know you are heading to your first Olympics?
I am really excited to be heading to my first Olympics. This is a dream come true for me, and I can’t wait to go compete in front of the world with my team, Team USA!

Has getting to the Olympics always been an ultimate goal for you?
Making the Olympic Team this year was very special for me. I remember watching the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea and that was when I decided I wanted to train to become an Olympian. To actually achieve that goal was so awesome and everything that I have been through during my career has all been worth it.

What does it feel like to be a part of this Olympic Team?
To be a part of this Olympic Team is very special. I think this team is one of the best teams ever put together in the U.S. mainly because the entire team is very strong. The Olympics should be an exciting competition for us and I know we will be ready to go.

Jason Gatson Stats

What are you most excited about?
I am just excited about the Olympics itself and being able to represent our country. Not too many people get to be an Olympian, so I am going to enjoy my time in Greece to the fullest.

How do you feel about competitions outside the US? Does it affect you any differently than if you were staying here in the States?
I love competing out of the country. There is just a good feeling about going to another country and being able to represent your own. For me, a competition is a competition whereever I am.

Will your training change over the next month?
If so, how? When we get closer to the Opening Ceremonies, we will start tapering down our training. That basically means our workouts will be more efficient and we will spend less time in the gym.

When do you actually leave for Athens?
We leave August 3rd.

What is your personal goal at this years Olympic Games? And as a team?
First and foremost, the ultimate goal is to win a team medal. We will do our best to bring back the gold because that is what we have been working for. After we are done with the team, then I will worry about myself and whatever events I am able to compete in during the Finals.
