Jason Gatson Diary: May 19, 2004
Please tell us your short-term and long-term goals in the sport.
My short-term goal is to make the 2004 Olympic Team and to compete in Athens. My long-term goal is to compete another four years and make the Olympic Team in 2008. I’ve had such a long career and USA Gymnastics has always been a part of my life. When I retire I hope to still have some involvement in the sport.
What has been your most memorable moment in gymnastics?
My most memorable moment was competing in the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim last summer. This is mostly because it was in the United States and it was after a long comeback for me. To be able to go there and win a medal for the U.S. was awesome!
What are you most looking forward to in your career?
One day I hope to be part of a team that wins a gold medal in the Olympics. This is the ultimate goal for everyone. The men’s program has a come a long way and it would be nice to see the guys win a gold medal.
Who is your role model and why?
I have a lot of people that I look up to. In the sport, I’ve always looked up to Blaine Wilson, John Roethlisberger and many others. I really look up to them and being able to compete with them has been amazing. It’s taught me a lot throughout the years.
Do you have a good luck charm and/or any superstitions?
No, I don’t actually. There’s enough to worry about on competition day. I typically have a morning workout, nap and get ready to compete.
What is your favorite event?
My favorite event is parallel bars because I tend to swing the event pretty good; I enjoy it. I really like them all, but parallel bars is one of my better events.
How does USA Gymnastics’ relationship with Chevron impact you, your training, coaches, etc.?
The relationship with Chevron has had a positive impact. A lot of guys have been helped through Chevron support. We spend so much time in the gym training and being sponsored by Chevron has allowed us to train longer, spend more time in the gym and become the best in the world.
If you could be an Olympian in another sport, what sport would you choose and why?
There isn’t one! I’m a gymnast for life! I have a lot of respect for athletes in all other Olympic sports. Living at the United States Olympic Training Center has given me the opportunity to get to know other athletes and see the struggles they go through; each sport is unique in its own way.
