Blaine Wilson Diary: June 9, 2004

Tell us a little about what you were thinking going into Championships as far as your health was concerned?
My coach and I decided that I would not be able to compete in all of the events. I was going to compete on floor and/or vault, but since it wasn’t really beneficial to do so, we decided not to.

How does withdrawing from the competition affect your attitude heading into the final months of your career, preparation for Trials, etc.?
I didn’t really think about it at the time. I was there to work out, do routines and let people know that I would be back for Trials. I’m just looking forward to competing in Anaheim at the Trials.

Did you stay in Nashville after you withdrew or did you head straight home?
Yes, I did stay in Nashville. I was able to train everyday with the exception of Saturday when we had meetings and such. I also trained on Sunday when I got home.

What did you think of the competition in Nashville?
I thought the competition was good overall. The guys looked good. There were some small things that were issues, but because the Championships and Trials are such a high pressure situation, some slight mistakes can be expected. That is the way it goes and you have to come back at Trials and do better! In general though, I thought it was a good competition.

On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate the intensity level in Nashville?
I thought it was at a 10! People were intense throughout the entire competition and they were not taking it lightly at all. They all want to make the top 6 and move on to the Olympic Team.

What did you learn from your experience in Nashville?
I hate watching gymnastics! A lot of people enjoy watching gymnastics because they do not compete in the sport and they appreciate what we do. However, when you are supposed to be competing it was really hard to watch the entire competition. When I am done and fully retired I will enjoy watching, but not until then.
