When I grow up…
If you’re still in school, sometimes it’s hard to think about what kind of job you will be doing when you get older. Even some grown-ups have a hard time figuring out what they really want to be doing. Believe it or not, occasionally even people with jobs wish they were doing something else.
That’s why it’s important to think about what you might be interested in early on. Maybe you won’t be working for a while, but a little thought will help you figure out the perfect job for you when you grow up. Even if you change your mind a thousand times, at least you have your mind working. Here are some helpful hints of how to start thinking about it:
Look at a job as a really fun thing to do every day.
Write down what your interests are. For example: do you like watching movies, and writing? You could be a movie critic for a newspaper. Do you like being outdoors and like playing games? You could be a director of a summer camp. Do you like drawing and computers? You could be a graphic designer. The possibilities are endless.
Ask people what they do and if they like it. You might find out about a job that you never knew existed. For instance, ever heard of a herpetologist? They are scientists that study reptiles and amphibians.
Having a clear idea of what you like will help you decide later in life what path to take. Stay true to yourself and know what works best for you. Just because your parents or friends like certain things doesn’t mean you will. Discover your interests and go for them. With persistence comes success!
