These are four events that women gymnasts strive to master. And, if you watched the women’s gymnastics competition during the 1996 Olympics Games you got a taste of how exciting and challenging this sport can be. Imagine the excitement and thrills that lie ahead for seven young gymnasts on their way to Sydney, Australia to compete in the 2000 Olympic Games. These young women are practicing their jumps, flips, turns, spins, and tumbles hoping to vault themselves into a gold medal this year. But, what happened during the Olympic Games four years ago that resulted in the US women’s team being referred to as…”The Magnificent Seven”.

An earlier article discussed interesting information about the origins of the first Olympic Games in Greece in 776 BC. The article concluded with the Romans gaining control of Greece and ultimately canceling the Olympic Games in 393 AD. The ancient Olympic Games actually lasted for 1170 years! But then…there was a long gap with no Olympic Games. In fact, there were no games held for over 1500 years.

Athletes from all over the world are competing in Olympic trials for the 2000 Olympic Games in order to win a coveted spot on their countries Olympic team. Some athletes train and practice for almost their entire lives in order to get a chance to go to the Olympics and bring home a medal for themselves and their country. If you watched the Olympic trials on Thursday, Aug.10 you caught a glimpse of the excitement that surrounds these games. In the 100-meter butterfly swimming trial Jenny Thompson touched the wall a split-second faster than Dana Torres-two swimmers who are very familiar to the Olympic Games. The two swimmers were even for almost the entire race when Thompson touched the wall at 57.78 seconds and Torres at 57.86 seconds.

Maybe you’d eat cookies for breakfast, play video games all day, ride your bike around the kitchen or make your little sister clean your room. The possibilities are endless! Jut, Marty, Nick and Gus are four brothers who get to do just that in When the Boys Ran the House by Joan Carris.

When their mom gets sick and has to stay in bed and their dad is away on a business trip, the boys are left in charge. But after a swarm of bees invade their kitchen, the cat gets a spray-paint job and a weird smell takes over their living room, Jut wonders if he’s really able to manage the house and three younger brothers.

An armadillo looks like a fat, humpback weasel in a suit of armor. In fact, armadillo is Spanish for “little armored one.” The armor is made of plates of bone covered with skin. These protective plates are connected by overlapping bands that partly circle the middle of the animal allowing it to bend.
