Bushido Virtues: Japanese Code of Conduct
Bushido is an ancient Japanese code of behavior that values honor, even at the cost of one’s own life. Mieko’s father wore pleated trousers known as hakama to the wedding. Those who practice the martial arts of Aikido and Kendo also wear the hakama. The seven pleats on a hakama represent the seven virtues of bushido:
- Gi - the right decision
- Yu - bravery
- Jin - universal love, compassion and benevolence
- Rei - right action, courtesy
- Makoto - sincerity, truthfulness
- Meiyo - honor
- Chugi - devotion, loyalty
