If There Is A Fire, Do You Know How to Stay Safe?
Imagine this - you’re in a room that is quickly filling up with smoke, making it impossible to see. It is dark, hot, loud and scary. While your first instinct might be to hide - don’t! Before a fire has the chance to take place, ask your parents if they have an emergency escape plan. If they don’t - work as a family to create one and practice it at least twice a year! Here is a link to download a tool to help you make your escape plan. Remember, practice makes perfect and could save your life.
Never play with or try to use matches or lighters - they should only be used by adults. Also, be careful around things that can cause a fire, such as the stove, fireplaces, and space heaters. It’s a good idea to keep at least 3 feet between yourself and these items. If you find matches or lighters, tell an adult to put them up high where kids can’t reach them.
Key tips to staying safe:
- Have your parents install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside of the sleeping areas.
- Help your parents test the alarms monthly and change the batteries once a year.
- Create and practice an escape plan with your family. Practicing at night after you are typically asleep will help you see if the sound of the smoke alarm can wake you up.
- Don’t play with matches and lighters.
