Witches
Halloween conjures up images of ghosts, goblins, skeletons and last, but by no means least, witches. What would Halloween be without warty witches cackling eerily as they fly through the night sky on their broomsticks? The Tribune reporters wanted to know what those witches are up to when they touch down on Halloween night. Not one of them was able to find out more than rumor and hearsay, so read this report with a grain of salt, and then throw it over your left shoulder.
Supposedly witches gather twice a year, on April 30, the eve of May Day, and on October 31, All Hallows Eve. According to wide spread legends, it is on these evenings that witches would attend a party hosted by the devil. After parking their broomsticks they would have a great old time eating, drinking and visiting. But then they would get down to business. They would change into other forms, cast spells on unsuspecting people and generally wreak all kinds of magical mischief. Here at The Tribune we can neither confirm nor deny the activities at these alleged parties. It seems that the reporters assigned to this part of the story have come down with a serious case of goose bumps.
If you want to see a witch for yourself, it is said that on Halloween night you must wear your clothes inside out and walk backwards. Then, at the stroke of midnight, a witch would materialize before you. What exactly you would do then, however, is a question our reporters either failed to answer or were too scared to ask.
As you know, witches usually travel with a black cat as a sidekick, or what is known in witchcraft as a familiar. Superstitions abound about black cats. Some say that witches can change into black cats while others believe that black cats are the spirits of the dead. Superstitious folk believe that if a black cat crosses your path you would be struck by bad luck unless you turn around and go back the way you came. Unfortunately, for our article, all our reporters have turned back and returned to our offices without testing the theory. So that’s the scoop on witches and their Halloween agenda. Fact or fiction? That’s a mystery we haven’t cracked.
