Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th in the US, and many students have a school holiday around that date. This is the special day to honor America’s past and present soldiers.
Veterans Day started back in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 Armistice Day in honor of the truce that ended World War I.
The word armistice means “a temporary suspension of hostilities by agreement between the opponents”. But the armistice, or suspension of hostilities, ended with the outbreak of World War II. After World War II ended, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill renaming November 11 Veterans Day instead of Armistice Day.
