Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is the holiday that celebrates the bountiful harvest feast that followed the pilgrim settlers’ first year in Plymouth Colony. The pilgrims landed on the New England coast at Plymouth Rock in 1620 and their first year was very difficult. They lost 46 of the original 102 people who sailed over on the Mayflower. It is thought that without the help of the Native Americans from the Wamanoag tribe they would not have survived.
To celebrate and give thanks for the bountiful harvest of 1621, the pilgrims decided to feast with the people of the Wamanoag tribe. Their feast lasted for three days. In 1863 President Lincoln proclaimed the day as a day of thanks and Americans have been celebrating the holiday the last Thursday of November ever since. The tradition of thanksgiving day has become a day for families to gather and have a dinner with turkey, dressing, cranberries, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie, and remember all the things and people we have to be thankful for.
