If you’ve seen the little angel with a bow and arrow flitting around Valentine’s Day cards and decorations then you are familiar with Cupid. In Roman mythology, Cupid is the mischievous, winged child of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. He is armed with a bow and quiver of arrows. According to myth, the victims of his arrows fall deeply in love.
Signing an “X” for a Kiss…
In Medieval times only the few who were educated could write. Others who had to sign their name to official documents were allowed to mark an “X” to represent their name. The signer would then kiss the “X” in the presence of witnesses to show his sincerity or to seal a pledge. Over time the “X” became synonymous with the kiss.
A Pair of Doves…
In the Middle Ages it was believed that on February 14th, Saint Valentine’s Day, doves picked their mate for life.
