The Lakota people of South Dakota have believed in a story and prophecy for 2,000 years. The story told of the white buffalo calf woman begins two thousand years ago when two warriors were hunting buffalo. All of a sudden they saw a white buffalo calf come near them.

As it got closer, it turned into a beautiful young Indian girl. She told them that she would return in four days with a sacred bundle. Indeed she came back and with her was her bundle which she spent four days explaining the meaning of.

In this bundle were the seven sacred ceremonies that are still honored today.

One of them was the sweat lodge, or purification ceremony. One was the child naming ceremony. The third was the healing ceremony. The fourth was the making of relatives or the adoption ceremony. The fifth one was the marriage ceremony. The sixth was the vision quest. And the seventh was the sundance ceremony, the people’s ceremony for all of the nation.

Before she left the White Buffalo Calf Woman promised to return again. She made a prophecy that she would return as a white buffalo calf. Her return would mean that she was back to purify the world and bring back harmony, balance and spirituality.

What is amazing about this prophecy is that it actually came true. In August of 1994, a white buffalo female calf was born in Wisconsin. The chances of this happening are extremely slim. The Lakota people took this as a sign that the White Buffalo Calf Woman had returned to lead people towards peace and balance. Whether you believe this prophecy or not, it gives hope to people around the world. It allows some people to believe that one day there will be world peace, and oh what a wonderful belief that is!
