Solar Smores
Must of us use a stove, microwave, or fire from a fireplace to heat our food. But did you know that we can use the heat from the sun to heat and melt some of our favorite foods? Many types of rays come from the sun including heat rays, ultraviolet light rays, and visible light rays. Too much exposure to the sun can be dangerous because the ultraviolet rays can cause damage to our skin or cause us to get a painful sunburn.
Make sure you wear sun tan lotion if are going to be in the sun for a long period of time. The heat rays from the sun can be used to heat our homes and even cook food! Try this fun food experiment on the next sunny day.
- Large Sized Marshmallows
- Graham Crackers
- Chocolate Squares
- Cookie Sheet
- Wax Paper
- Cover the cookie sheet with a piece of wax paper
- Separate the graham crackers into the desired size-probably into bite-sized pieces
- Place one or two large sized marshmallows on top of each graham cracker
- Place one or two chocolate squares on top of the marshmallows
- Place the cookie sheet in a place where it will have direct sunlight
- Turn the cookie sheet so that it is always facing the sun
- When the chocolate melts and the marshmallow becomes very soft-your tasty treat is done
- Remove from the sheet and enjoy!
Now you have your own chocolate and marshmallow snacks that were heated by the sun. You saved energy by not using the energy from a stove or microwave. Eat and enjoy!
