Make Your Own Flag

American Flag

You will see the American Flag displayed in many areas of your neighborhood on Memorial Day in May and on other national holidays. Here’s a flag you can make yourself for Memorial Day. Remember to save it for the July 4th holiday too! And don’t forget to ask an adult help you.

  • 8 1/2″ x 11″ white kraft paper
  • red construction paper
  • blue construction paper
  • small white stars (stickers, gummed stars or your own cutouts)
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • glue stick

  1. Along the 11-inch side of the red construction paper, cut 5 strips, each 1″ wide.
  2. Cut a 3″ by 3″ square of blue construction paper.
  3. Glue a red strip of construction paper onto the white kraft paper along one 11″ side. Make sure it is even with the top edge of the paper, with no white showing along the edge. This is the top of your flag.
  4. Glue the remaining red strips of paper onto the white kraft paper in rows, leaving a little less than an inch of white space between the strips. The last strip should be even with the bottom edge of the kraft paper.
  5. Glue the blue square to the top left-hand corner of the paper.
  6. Stick or glue the small white stars to the blue square.
  7. Let the glue dry. Now you are ready to put your new flag in the window, on a fence, or on your bulletin board. You can use string and clothespins to hang your flag outside.
