Make Your Own Kite

Summer is here and it’s time to have some fun! In the last few issues of the Tribune we gave you some great game ideas that you can play with your friends outside. But what if your friends are not around? There are a lot of fun things that you can do on your own. Here is one great idea that you can try on a clear but slightly windy day. Make your very own kite and then take it outside to fly!

  • One large brown paper bag
  • Hole punch
  • Tape
  • String
  • Crayons, paint, streamers or any other decorating items

  1. Open the brown paper bag and punch a hole in each corner of the bag on the open end.
  2. Reinforce the holes with tape so they will not rip.
  3. Cut out 2 pieces of string about three feet long.
  4. Thread each of the strings through two holes on one end of the bag and tie together.
  5. Then cut out another length on string (the length will depend on how high you want the kite to fly) and thread it through both of the string loops from the previous step and then tie.
  6. Decorate your kite in any way that you want. Streamers work well if they are attached to the bottom of the kite. Be creative.
  7. Take your kite outside and let it catch some wind while you slowly release some string. Keep releasing the string and watch your kite fly!
