Make a Balloon Rocket!
Here is another way to have fun with balloons, one of the most celebratory things to play with. They float, pop, splat and more.
Did you know that balloons can propel rockets too? The principle of air pressure is critical here, for it is in the control and release of air pressure that so much can be achieved.
- 1 balloon (the longer, salami-shaped ones work the best)
- A long piece of kite string (10-15 feet)
- 1 plastic straw
- tape
- Tie one end of the string to a door knob, chair, or other support. Now, thread the loose end of the string through the straw.
- Pull the string tight, and tie it to another support in the room.
- Blow up the balloon and pinch it tightly closed (don’t tie it).
- Next, take your tape and fasten the balloon to the straw, positioning the balloon so it rests under the straw and string.
- Count down, and launch your rocket by letting go of the balloon. What do you think would cause the balloon to propel more quickly? Experiment with more and less air.
Why It Works:
When you inflate a balloon, air is contained inside the rubber material. The more air you force into the balloon, the more it wants to escape. That’s why, when you release the seal of the opening, and all of the air rushes out, the balloon is propelled like a rocket.
