Make a Rubber Egg Experiment
Experimenting with eggs is fun. In this experiment, you’ll learn how to make turn a real egg into a “rubber” egg that can bounce!
- One raw egg
- White vinegar
- A jar
- Place the egg in the jar and then cover with vinegar.
- Put a cover on the jar and let it sit for two days. Then, change the vinegar.
- Now, put the jar with the egg away for one week-just let it soak.
- Check it out to see what changes have occurred.
- Try this experiment with a hard-boiled egg for extra cool effects.
What Happened:
The shell of an egg is made of calcium. When calcium is exposed to concentrated acid, like vinegar, it dissolves. In this experiment, the shell should dissolve, but the membrane of the egg should remain in tact. The egg should stretch to accommodate the vinegar, which takes up more space. If you shake the jar, you will see the yolk sloshing around inside of the whites. If you try this experiment with a hard-boiled egg, by the end of the experiment, the egg should be able to bounce! How egg-citing.
