Build Yourself A Bird Feeder
Hey everybody! Guess what? This week we’re gong to learn how to make a bird feeder. Aren’t you psyched? Birds are fun to watch.
The best thing about a bird feeder may be in the variety of brids it attracts, types that you may never have seen before in your garden or area. You might also be surprised at how quickly the presence of birds may attract other creatures - like cats!
- A small milk carton
- A stapler with staples
- Hole puncher
- Yarn or string
- A tree outside
- Poster Paint (non toxic)
- Bird seed
- First, you’ll have to wash the milk carton.
- Now, cut a small section from the side of the carton. It should be located where you think the bird should be able to feed. Next, staple the top opening so it is closed.
- Get out your paints, and paint something really cool on the carton. Let it dry. If you paint it like a tree, it may attract more birds.
- Choose a tree to hang it on.
- Now, punch a hole into the top of the carton, in the middle. Thread the yarn through the top, so you can hang the feeder. Give it enough length so that it will be free of branches.
- Put a bit of the appropriate bird food in. Use thistle seed, for example, if you want to attract finches. Then hang on the chosen tree!
What Happened:
Just like humans, birds get hungry! They eat seeds, digest them, and then pass them through to the earth. Plants often grow thanks to the birds that help distribute seeds.
You can also try to attract birds by sticking a piece of bread or donut on a tree’s twig. They may also enjoy oranges and bread crumbs. You can keep a journal of the types of birds that you attract with your feeder.
