How to Make a Bird Feeder

bird feeder

It’s fun to see all the different birds that might visit you on your balcony or in your garden. From sweet little brown sparrows and lovely songbirds to showy blue jays and cardinals, you can attract the birds of your area with a homemade bird feeder.

This is a good time of year to provide sunflower seeds for chickadees, blue jays, and cardinals so if your birdseed does not include any, you may want to add some to the mix. Blue jays would even appreciate some corn kernels that they’ll stow in their cheeks before flying off to enjoy them.

You can make several of these easy bird feeders to hang all over your yard.

  • slice of white bread
  • large cookie cutter
  • yarn
  • bird seed
  • 1 plate
  • knife (plastic is fine)
  • peanut butter

  1. Punch a nice shape out of the white bread with the cookie cutter.
  2. Carefully put a hole into your cut out bread.
  3. Thread the yarn through the hole and tie the ends so that you have a loop to use as a hanger.
  4. Let the bread shapes sit out for a day or two to become firm.
  5. When the bread is firm, pour some bird seed onto the plate.
  6. With the knife, spread peanut butter on the bread
  7. Push the peanut butter side of the bread into the bird seed.
  8. Turn the bread over and put peanut butter and seed on the other side.
  9. Hang outside on a tree for the birds to eat and see who stops by for a snack.

Note: Because this craft project uses peanut butter, children with peanut allergies are advised to not take part in making this.
