Pumpkin-Shaped Cake Recipe

Halloween is just around the corner–are you prepared for this fun, frightening, and spooky holiday? Whether you’re getting dressed up in a costume and going out trick-or-treating or just staying at home with your friends and family, there are plenty of ways to have fun on this holiday. Here’s a fun project that you can try this Halloween–decorate your own pumpkin cake! Make sure to ask your parents for help when using the oven.
- Box of cake mix and all ingredients to make the cake
- White frosting, either homemade or from a container
- Green, red, and yellow food coloring
- Bundt cake pan
- Cupcake pan or a cupcake liner that does not require a pan
- Prepare your cake mix according to the directions on the box
- Pour a small amount of the cake batter into one or two cupcake holders. You only need one but it might be a good idea to make two so you have one as back-up (and as a tasting sample!)
- Pour the rest of the cake batter into the bundt cake pan
- Bake the cake and the cupcake(s) according to the directions listed on the box. Watch the cupcake closely since it will be done sooner than the cake.
- Allow the cupcake and cake to cool for at least 30 minutes before you begin the frosting process
- Take approximately 90% of your frosting and add to a small bowl. Slowly add drops of the yellow and red food coloring and mix together until the frosting turns orange. You can make the orange lighter by adding more yellow and darker by adding more red. Frost the entire cake with this orange frosting.
- Take the remaining 10% of your frosting and add to a small bowl. Slowly add drops of the green food coloring and mix together until the frosting turns green. Remove the liner from one cupcake and frost the sides and bottom with the green frosting.
- Then take your cupcake and place it with the bottom (which should be frosted green) facing up in the middle of the cake (this will be the “stem” of your pumpkin).
- Serve and enjoy!
