Spice Up Your Snack Life

Columbus may have dreamed of gold, but he knew that exotic herbs and spices were valued almost as highly. Adventurers who went in search of new and aromatic herbs and spices would be richly rewarded upon their return. However, some very fine herbs were available right at home for Christopher Columbus. Basil and Oregano grew wild in his native Italy. Try this recipe and see if the taste of Oregano is one you recognize. Don’t forget to ask an adult for help.

Oregano

  • Measuring tablespoon
  • Paper plate
  • Toaster
  • Microwave oven
  • English Muffins
  • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup or tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons shredded Mozarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons sliced pepperoni (optional)
  • Dried Oregano leaves

  1. Split the English muffin.
  2. Toast the muffin slices and place on the paper plate.
  3. Spread cut sides with ketchup or tomato sauce.
  4. Sprinkle with oregano.
  5. Top with cheese and pepperoni.
  6. Microwave on HIGH for 30-45 seconds or until cheese is melted.
  7. Let the muffins cool before eating.

Exotic spices are still valued today. Many spices are expensive because they often grow in remote areas or are difficult to grow. However, they won’t command a chest of gold coins like they might have when Marco Polo or Christopher Columbus were exploring the globe. Here’s a list of spices you might find in your kitchen.

  • Basil
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Tarragon
  • Cinamon
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger

Can you name any other spices?
