Food Facts

Here are some interesting food facts about the very first Thanksgiving ever held by the pilgrims in what were then British colonies and more than a century later became the United States of America.

  • Fish
  • Birds
  • Meat
  • Fruits
  • Nuts

  • Ham - they had no domestic pigs
  • Sweet Potatoes or Yams - these were not native to New England
  • Corn on the cob - they only had Indian corn which was good for cornmeal, not to be eaten off the cob
  • Pumpkin Pie - perhaps they consumed a pumpkin pudding, but no crust could be made because they had no flour or dairy products
  • Cranberry Sauce - cranberries were available to them but not sugar
