Welcome to San Francisco, one of the most beautiful and cultural cities in the world. But it wasn’t always that way. Imagine a time in the 1840’s when there were only a few hundred people that lived in what is now a metropolis. If you know about the gold rush, then you can probably guess why San Francisco became so important. Let’s take a look.
Come on down to Louisiana for a warm southern welcome! There is so much history and culture in Louisiana to explore, so let’s start looking. France owned the land that is now Louisiana 200 hundred years ago. On April 30, 1803, the United States bought this land from Napoleon Bonaparte for 15 million dollars, which averaged out to be only four cents an acre! This acquisition of 600 million acres became known as the Louisiana Purchase, and from this territory, thirteen states were carved out: Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Colorado and Montana.
Today’s online field trip takes us to Ellis Island, which served as the portal to almost all American immigrants arriving between 1892 and 1954.
Under the leadership of Lee Iacocca, the nonprofit Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation restored the Ellis Island Main Building and created the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. The Museum tells the inspiring story of the largest human migration in modern history.
