Japan Kimono

Yukata Kimonos

Originally, “kimono” was the Japanese word for clothing. But in the early 1900s, as western fashions became a part of Japanese society, the term came to mean only the traditional form of clothing. Today, kimonos are only worn on special occasions such as weddings, funerals, tea ceremonies, summer festivals and visits to the temple. Handed down from one generation to the next, kimonos are treasured family heirlooms and beautiful works of art.

Bushido Virtues: Japanese Code of Conduct

Bushido is an ancient Japanese code of behavior that values honor, even at the cost of one’s own life. Mieko’s father wore pleated trousers known as hakama to the wedding. Those who practice the martial arts of Aikido and Kendo also wear the hakama. The seven pleats on a hakama represent the seven virtues of bushido:

  1. Gi - the right decision
  2. Yu - bravery
  3. Jin - universal love, compassion and benevolence
  4. Rei - right action, courtesy
  5. Makoto - sincerity, truthfulness
  6. Meiyo - honor
  7. Chugi - devotion, loyalty

They had slung their mother’s treasured quilt over the backs of four chairs to make a roof for their makeshift playhouse. Both girls loved the quilt with all the pretty images that told the story of their mother’s earlier life. Grandma had stitched each piece carefully and lovingly by hand for her daughter.
