Depth Perception: Monocular Cues

Odds & Ends

Park
You’re one year older and you wake up to a big surprise– your friends are blindfolding you and taking you out to a birthday treat! You drive for a while, walk a couple of blocks, take off your blindfold and find yourself in a grassy park with a cake in front of you. Lucky you! However, you’ve never been here before, so how do you know if you’re actually at a new place or just in front of a huge, detailed picture?

Well, it’s not that likely that you’d be brought to a place where there is such a large image, but being able to tell the difference between a complicated 2-dimensional picture and a 3-dimensional place with objects is something we often take for granted. Thanks to what are called depth cues, we can use these hints to tell that a tree is farther back behind another tree, and not equally far from you as they would be in a flat photograph.

High Definition Television (HDTV)

Odds & Ends

HDVT Television

Have you ever heard of HDTV? How is HDTV different from regular TV?

HDTV means high definition television, and it’s a rather new broadcast technology.

Welcome to the New Website Design

Odds & Ends

ChevronCars.com will be launching newly-designed sections of the website in the coming months. We wanted our loyal Chevron Cars fans to be the first to see the new designs, so we’ve opened up a “Beta” version of this new section. A “Beta” version means that we’re still working on it (so there may be a few kinks to work out), but it allows us to show it to people so you can let us know what you think!

The Original 1959 Barbie Doll

Odds & Ends

The American Barbie doll is one of the most successful toys in the history of the toy industry, and if there’s one person behind Barbie’s success, it’s Ruth Handler, the woman responsible for designing and marketing the iconic Barbie Doll when she was first introduced back in 1959.

But do be careful of that creamy snack called Canary Cream that turns those who eat it into canaries! Top 10 Tallest Buildings in the World

Odds & Ends

It’s not as easy as you might think to list the tallest buildings in the world. For example, some people say that the tallest building in the world is the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada–it’s height is 1,821 feet! It is a telecommunications tower and an entertainment complex visited by about 2 million tourists each year. The revolving restaurant on top turns 360 degrees every hour, and has a deck from where you can have a really top-of-the-world view of Toronto. But many people don’t consider the CN tower to be a building, since it does not contains occupied floors throughout its full height.
