Origin of Mahjong
The traditional game of Mahjong originated in China, specifically in the Shanghai province. Some believe that Mahjong was developed more than 2,500 years ago, yet the earliest evidence of the game dates back to the nineteenth century. The name ‘Mahjong’ roughly translates to “cluttering birds.” It is believed that this name came from the sound the tiles make when they are shuffled.
Have you heard about Sudoku? Sudoku is a fun logic puzzle that has grown very popular among children and adults in recent months. The puzzle is a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 regions. The object of the puzzle is to have all numbers 1 through 9 fill each column and each row, and each 3×3 region, but without repeating any of the same numbers in any column, row or 3×3 regions. The game also comes in an easier 2×2 version for beginners.

It’s important that you keep you body and your mind active during the long school season ahead. As long as the weather permits, try having fun with some outdoor activities for at least an hour a day. If you can’t play outside, try some fun indoor activities to exercise your body and stimulate your mind.

For you, it may be a matter of fun. You can go ice fishing too, but you get to do it in the warmth of your own home. Ask an adult to go fishing with you.
Gather up all of your friends this weekend and go for a scavenger hunt. To make it interesting, you could have a prize for the winner, like a candy bar. Or you could get together in teams and search with another person. However you decide to do it, it’s fun and a great way to get out and do something. Get a pen and copy this list, or print out this edition of the Tribune and give the list to each one of your friends. Whoever finds everything on the list first wins!
Summer is here so let the fun begin! Many kids find themselves with a lot of free time during this extended break from school. Summer is the perfect time to start a new project, read some new books and have some fun with friends outside in the sunshine. Instead of spending time in front of the television or the video game machine, try having some fun outdoors with your friends. In last week’s edition of the Tribune there were a couple of great ideas for some fun outdoor games. Here are a few more outdoor games for you to try…have fun and good luck!

Well we know that sitting in a car with nothing to do for a long period of time can be very boring. So here are some fun car games that you play with your brothers and sisters (and even your parents) while you are on that long car journey. These games are creative and challenging and can turn that long monotonous car journey into a fun and interactive car- riding experience!
