With school starting up within the next several weeks, some of you might be wondering, what ever happened to summer? Don’t worry– we’ve compiled a list of exciting activities to finish off your summer.

You’re one year older and you wake up to a big surprise– your friends are blindfolding you and taking you out to a birthday treat! You drive for a while, walk a couple of blocks, take off your blindfold and find yourself in a grassy park with a cake in front of you. Lucky you! However, you’ve never been here before, so how do you know if you’re actually at a new place or just in front of a huge, detailed picture?
Well, it’s not that likely that you’d be brought to a place where there is such a large image, but being able to tell the difference between a complicated 2-dimensional picture and a 3-dimensional place with objects is something we often take for granted. Thanks to what are called depth cues, we can use these hints to tell that a tree is farther back behind another tree, and not equally far from you as they would be in a flat photograph.
Origin of Mahjong
The traditional game of Mahjong originated in China, specifically in the Shanghai province. Some believe that Mahjong was developed more than 2,500 years ago, yet the earliest evidence of the game dates back to the nineteenth century. The name ‘Mahjong’ roughly translates to “cluttering birds.” It is believed that this name came from the sound the tiles make when they are shuffled.
Although the art of Bonsai originated in China over 2,000 years ago, the development and practice has primarily become part of the Japanese culture. The word ‘bonsai’ translates as ‘tray-planting’ and is not meant to describe the plant itself, but the process through which the plant was created. Bonsai is truly an art practice.
The art of bonsai consists of growing miniaturized trees and is based purely on aesthetics. Bonsai trees are not miniature naturally, but can be made out of any ordinary tree or shrub and are miniaturized through bonsai techniques. There are many different bonsai techniques, some are basic techniques while others are very advanced and only practiced by experienced bonsai masters.

Have you heard about Sudoku? Sudoku is a fun logic puzzle that has grown very popular among children and adults in recent months. The puzzle is a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 regions. The object of the puzzle is to have all numbers 1 through 9 fill each column and each row, and each 3×3 region, but without repeating any of the same numbers in any column, row or 3×3 regions. The game also comes in an easier 2×2 version for beginners.

Get ready for the Easter Bunny with this Easter basket project. All you need is a simple basket of some sort, a plastic fruit basket you get in grocery stores will do just fine. You will use colored papers, tape and other things you might have lying around to help decorate it and turn it into something special.
In ancient Egyptian art, the human figure is usually seen as many different angles blended together. The head, arms and legs are shown in a profile view but the shoulders and the top torso face frontward. The lower torso twists to a profile position. Over and over you see these sorts of figures which aren’t very accurate depictions of the human form, but interesting to look at nonetheless. Look at the 2 Egyptian figures in this photo. Do you see similarities? Try drawing your own Egyptian figure. Make sure to give them color. Though the color has long worn off, when these figures were first carved, they were painted with brilliant colors.
You can imitate the sound of the Ben Franklin’s armonica by using empty wine glasses and water. Ben Franklin was one of America’s greatest inventors and statesmen, and invented the armonica in London in the 1860s. He apparently derived the greatest joy from this musical invention. So can you, and it is not that difficult!
