Dream Catchers
A dream catcher is a Native American craft created for children and adults. It is believed that the the dream catcher will filter out all the bad bawedjigewin (dreams) and allow only good thoughts to enter into our minds. You will see a small hole in the center of each dream catcher where those good bawadjige may come through. With the first rays of sunlight, the bad dreams would perish.
What you need to create a dream catcher:
- a bendable twig about 1 foot long
- a few inches of thin wire
- some twine or string
- beads with large holes
- a few feathers
Have an adult make a hoop from a twig. To do this, wrap a short length of thin wire around the overlapping ends. Cut a few feet of string. Tie one end of the string to the twig hoop. String a few beads onto the string and push the beads toward the tied end. Wrap the string around the other side of the hoop. String a few more beads on the string and then wrap the string around the far side of the hoop. Repeat until you have an interesting webbing design. Tie a short length of string on the hoop. String a bead or two on it and then tie a feather onto the end. Repeat this a few times (2 or 3 hanging feather strings look nice). Hang the dream catcher near your bed!
