24 Ways to Savor the Summer

Tie DyeWith school starting up within the next several weeks, some of you might be wondering, what ever happened to summer? Don’t worry– we’ve compiled a list of exciting activities to finish off your summer.

Remember - always be safe, don’t do anything without first asking your parent or guardian, and having them supervise you when needed.

  1. Become a photographer: If you don’t have one, you can borrow a camera from a parent or sibling, or buy a disposable camera from your local store for less than $15.
  2. Ice cream sleep-over: Call your friends over to spend the night, gather some movies to watch, and create an ice cream sundae station full of candies, sprinkles and warm fudge!
  3. Running through sprinklers

  4. Visit a zoo: And if you’re feeling artsy, bring some paper and colored pencils to draw what you see.
  5. Run through the sprinklers: Or even better, find out when your local park sets off its sprinklers and run through those.
  6. Create a web site: Lissa Explains it All is a great resource for learning how to build your first site
  7. Build a fort: Chairs and blankets are essential fort building tools.
  8. Tie-dye a t-shirt: Look here for instructions
  9. Start a collection: Rocks, spoons, Chevron Cars, fish stuffed animals- the possibilities are endless. See how unique your collection can be!
  10. Visit a national or state park: You’ll be surprised how close one may be and how fun they are to explore.
  11. Rearrange and redecorate your bedroom: Think about the goals you want to meet this coming school year and arrange your belongings to reflect that new attitude. Want to be more organized with your classes? Organizing your room can set you in a good mind state for that. Want to read more? Organize your bookcase to figure out which kinds of books you want to read more of and which you can donate (read here to learn more about where you can donate books). Want to study more by your desk than the couch? Clean up your desk space so that it’s the ultimate study zone.
  12. Start a dream journal: Keep it right by your bed so you can right-away write down what you remember each morning from the previous night. Do you see any patterns? If you’re feeling curious, pick up a dream encyclopedia to see what your dreams mean!
  13. Hold a picnic: Whether it’s at a park or your backyard, eating in a grassy spot on a sunny day is always relaxing. If the clouds are out, lie down on your blanket and see if you spot any creatures. Blow some bubbles for extra fun.
  14. Fly a kite on a windy day: If you’re feeling crafty, make your own kite!
  15. Play flashlight tag: Gather up a bunch of friends and flashlights to play this one at night. It’s just like regular tag, except you shine your flashlight on the next ‘it’ person instead of tagging them with your hand.
  16. Popsicles

  17. Attend a music festival: Check your local paper to see if there are any free admission and all-ages music festivals going on in your area.
  18. Make popsicles: Fill a popsicle mold with your favorite juice or smoothie blend and enjoy on an especially hot day.
  19. Volunteer at a pet shelter: Make a difference in your community while playing with cute puppies and cats.
  20. Learn to sew or knit: This will come in handy during the winter when you need a scarf!
  21. Go camping in your backyard: Whether going to an actual campsite is an option for you or not, there’s nothing like camping in your backyard, telling spooky stories, staring at the stars …and still being able to go in to get a warm drink.
  22. Have a tree-climbing match: Take turns climbing a tree with a friend. Place a Post-It at the highest point you can reach at the end of each turn and see who can place theirs the highest.
  23. Watch a whole movie series: These are some, but there are many more- Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter…
  24. Learn sign language: This can be more fun with a friend, especially since you two can then secretly communicate.
  25. Put a spin on breakfast: Think of ways to add to your favorite breakfast foods. Banana slices in your pancakes? Mini M&Ms in your waffles? Cream cheese in your scrambled eggs? See how creative (and tasty!) you can get.
  26. Explore the world: Use Google Earth to explore places you’d like to visit someday. See if you can find the Statue of Liberty, Egyptian pyramids, the Grand Canyon, a Hawaiian volcano, or the Eiffel Tower.

Remember - always be safe, don’t do anything without first asking your parent or guardian, and having them supervise you when needed.
