Parents
ChevronCars.com is largely a children's website, and takes issues of online privacy for children and adults very seriously. From its inception in 1997, the site strictly followed the Children's Guidelines set down by the Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARU) of the Better Business Bureau, and Chevron has continued to strictly follow all rules with respect to children on the Internet. A recent independent review of compliance with COPPA (the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1999) said that ChevronCars.com "does provide a model for websites that attract both children and adults." (Privacy Policies on Children's Websites: Do They Play by the Rules? by Joseph Turow, March 2001, p. 18).
When a user first registers on the site, they can set up their own User Name and Password. We ask for a user's age at that time. If the user's age is under 13, no personally identifiable information is requested from them or stored. We do optionally ask for their parents email address so that we can inform you that your child has registered for the site; this email address is deleted once the informational email is sent to you. For users who play games, game score information is stored in association with a user's screen name, but this is not personally identifiable and we urge users not to use screen names that are in any way identifiable. If children sign-up for any of the two newsletters they are eligible for, the General newsletter and the Tribune learning center newsletter, the email address they submit is not stored in association with their user name and is never used for any purpose other than sending these two newsletters. No email addresses that we collect are ever shared with or sold to other firms for any reasons whatsoever.
Users over 13 are optionally asked for an email address but no other information. To purchase an item from our online store, users need to be 18 years or older. During the checkout process we ask for address and later credit card information. Once again, this information is stored securely and not shared. Credit card information is not stored and users will need to re-enter this information each time they complete a purchase, although a record of previous purchases and address information is stored to facilitate future ordering.
